Record steel shipment arrives

Developers of the $165 million Pan Pacific Plaza have unloaded the largest delivery of fabricated steel in the history of Honolulu Harbor -- 5,500 tons.

The steel was shipped to Hawaii on the Moku Pahu, California & Hawaiian Sugar Co.'s giant sugar tug and barge, which usually travels to California or Louisiana loaded with sugar and returns empty.

Irwin Daniels, a partner in Bishop Street Associates, which is developing the 450,000-square-foot office complex, said above-ground construction will start at Bishop and Fort streets in two weeks.
