Technology! Our first thoughts are computers and change. And, as Gale Smith said at the opening of our 2002 Technology@home conference held in Ottawa, even an instrument as simple as a needle is a testimonial to evolving technology. Technology is constantly changing our world. Technology evokes hope for the future. Technology offers tools and processes we believe will help us grow enough food for all, provide affordable housing, improve our health care, educate and entertain us, and save us time and energy in our everyday life--whether it be at school, at home or at work. Technology allows access to instant information and communication locally and globally.
Some people embrace technology. Others look at it with caution, uncertainty and sometimes fear because it is constantly changing and difficult to control or predict. How will we keep informed when the latest technology has been surpassed before we can even learn it? New computers are obsolete before they are unwrapped and plugged in. Can we afford new technology? Can we afford not to adopt new technology? Who owns the technology? Where does old/used technology go when it is no longer functional? How do technology and its rapid change impact on individuals, families and communities? Who will take the time to study and research these questions?
