2003 JUN 19 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Primary non-small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the ovary can manifest first as a perforated intestine.
According to a study from the United States, "Primary non-small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the ovary is an uncommon malignant neoplasm that often coexists with a component of conventional surface epithelial cancer, particularly endometrioid or mucinous carcinoma.
"The prognosis for this type of ovarian cancer, whether pure or in composite with a surface epithelial carcinoma, is extremely poor. Early and widespread lymphatic and hematogenous metastases are the rule.
"Surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy are generally palliative, with a short remission phase. In this report, we discuss an example of ovarian non-small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma that presented as a surgical emergency (perforated intestine) secondary to widespread intra-abdominal metastatic disease," wrote S.L. Strobel and colleagues.
