If you love hot rods and have a thing for roller coasters, too, the new Top Thrill Dragster is the culmina-tion of your passion.
The 42-story Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, is designed to look and sound like a hot rod. From its heart-in-your-throat launch to its twisting, towering summit and dynamic 90-degree drop, the ride is 17 seconds (nearly four times more than a real Top Fuel run) of pure adrenaline rush over 2800 feet of red-and-white track.
Built by the Swiss firm Intamin, the $25 million Top Thrill Dragster is the first roller coaster to break the 400-foot-tall milestone. Termed a "strata-coaster'' at a height of 420 feet, it replaces the 318-foot-tall Steel Dragon 2000 in Mie, Japan, as the new Mayor of Coasterville.
According to Rob Decker, vice president for planning and design at Cedar Point, an incredible amount of time went into exploring acceleration in the development of the Top Thrill Dragster.
