2003 JUN 12 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Regardless of whether they use Medicaid or private insurance, black women want the same things in their prenatal care: plenty of time spent communicating with their doctors and comfortable and clean waiting rooms, according to a new study.
"While improvements in health care delivery tend to focus on increasing technical proficiency, the results of this study suggest that to improve pregnant women's satisfaction with care, prenatal care providers should focus on improvements in patient-provider communication, as well as features of the prenatal care setting," said Arden Handler, DrPH, of the University of Illinois and colleagues.
The study was published in the May-June issue of Women's Health Issues.
Black women in the study were more satisfied with their care when they spent less time in the waiting room, when their care providers spent more time asking and answering questions and explaining procedures and when their exam and waiting rooms were clean and comfortable.
Although these items were important to both Medicaid and privately insured black women, there were differences in how the two groups of women used prenatal care. For instance, women receiving Medicaid had visited their doctors less often than privately insured women at the same stage in their pregnancy.
