Global chip sales estimates cut
The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics group expects sales to rise 11.5% to $156.9 bil this year. It had seen 16.6% growth in Oct. WSTS cited the weak world economy and SARS. It forecast 18.4% growth in '04 and 7.9% in '05 vs. prior views for 19.2% growth in '04 and 2.5% in '05. Chip stocks, which have run strongly from the Oct. low on hopes for recovery, were little changed.
Software group: Piracy falls a bit
The Business Software Alliance says 39% of software used by firms in '02 was pirated vs. 40% in '01. That's 10 points below the rate in '94, when software makers first took on the issue together. Still, piracy cost the industry $13 bil in '02 vs. $11 bil in '01. Piracy rates in the West range from 24% to 35%, but can reach 90% in areas such as Asia. Piracy hit a six-year high in Asia.
Philips to launch iPod-like player
