Call it the fear of shopping.
Lingering concerns about security are the primary reason many consumers won't shop online, says a recent study by MasterCard International Inc.
In most cases it's safe for consumers to buy on the Internet, says Bruce Rutherford, vice president of electronic business and emerging technologies for MasterCard. But there are times when private information winds up in the wrong hands.
The upshot: Online retailers must continue to beef up security to get a piece of the burgeoning e-commerce market.
"The Internet is safe for buying online today, but there is room for improvement," Rutherford said.
Consumers agree.
