"Law & Order' seeks $1.6 bil deal
The producers of the three hit "Law & Order" series want a combined $550 mil a year, or $1.6 bil for a 3-year deal, from NBC, The New York Times said. It would be the biggest single pact in TV history, but the per-episode fee would be lower than some other shows. NBC parent GE may opt to buy Universal Television, producer of the series and a Vivendi unit.
** Vivendi sold its Spencer Gifts chain to a group led by Gordon Bros. and Palladin Capital for an undisclosed amount.
** Alliance Atlantis will get bonus payments of $100,000-$600,000 plus production costs if its CBS show "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" maintains high ratings next season. Shares rose 7%.
Cablevision will spin off two units
The cable operator will spin off its planned satellite TV service, Rainbow DBS, and its Clearview Cinemas movie theater chain to holders to focus on its core business. Cablevision Chairman Charles Dolan will be chairman of the new entity. Cablevision jumped 13% to 21.79.
