6 Attention to detail can mean the difference between life and death. Legendary Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi fought over 60 duels in his lifetime and never lost.
Musashi's secret was that he constantly analyzed the fencing techniques opponents used against him.
Musashi lived in 17th century Japan, where swordsmen followed fighting styles taught by various fencing or kenjutsu schools.
Wars had flooded Japan with thousands of masterless samurai, or ronin, such as Musashi. When they weren't looking for work, ronin would duel to advertise their skills.
A keen observer, Musashi studied the parrying and thrusting techniques of the different schools. He kept fine-tuning his fighting style.
If an adversary favored a sweeping cut from the side, Musashi thought of a way to thrust quickly with his sword at close quarters before his foe could strike him.
