Wolfowitz lowers WMD emphasis

Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz downplayed Iraqi weapons of mass destruction as the reason for the war. He cited "bureaucratic reasons" for focusing on Saddam Hussein's alleged arsenal and said a "huge" reason for war was to enable the U.S. to pull troops from Saudi Arabia. The U.S. announced a major expansion of efforts to find chemical and biological arms in Iraq, forming a hunt team of 1,400 U.S., British and Australian experts.

IRAQ: Lt. Gen. James Conway, commander of Marines in Iraq, said he was surprised that chemical weapons are "simply not there."
