Global chip sales slowed in April
Sales rose 9.7% to $12.14 bil from last year and were flat vs. March, but fell from growth rates of more than 20% earlier this year, World Semiconductor Trade Statistics said. April sales were weaker than expected as Asian consumer demand for PCs and cell phones cooled due to the SARS virus. But the Philly SOX index rose 1.9%. It has surged 83% from its Oct. 8 low.
HP dethrones IBM in server field
IDC says HP gained nearly 3 points in market share, by sales, in Q1 to retake the top spot with 27.9%. That's 2.4 points over IBM, which fell from 29% in Q4. Overall sales fell 2.3% vs. last year. For servers running Unix, Sun rose from No. 3 to tie HP for No. 1, knocking IBM to No. 3. IBM led for years before HP's buy of Compaq.
Veridian raises views, jumps 9%
The provider of security and surveillance services rose 2.15 to a seven-month high of 25.95. Late Thursday, Veridian said it'll earn 31-32 cents a share in Q2 and $1.23-$1.27 in '03. Analysts saw 29 cents and $1.19. Veridian also raised sales forecasts.
