Microsoft-AOL pact shifts rivalries

As part of the Net giants' $750 mil settlement, AOL will use Microsoft technologies such as its media player and Web browser. That could lead to trouble for rivals such as Apple. RealNetworks, which gets 5% of its sales from AOL, fell 9%. The titans will cooperate on instant messaging, which may snub Yahoo.

Home Depot sets share buyback

The world's No. 1 home improvement retailer said it'll buy back up to $500 mil worth of stock and reiterated it'll spend $4 bil on new stores and other expansion efforts. Home Depot holders easily re-elected all the firm's directors. Some had opposed co-founder Kenneth Langone amid board independence concerns. He has close ties with NYSE chief Richard Grasso.
