The first question this excellent book provokes is: What has taken so long? Why has a readable life of Gouverneur Morris not appeared sooner? It is true that Theodore Roosevelt, who, like Morris, was the offspring of New York gentlefolk, produced such a life -- but that volume appeared in 1888, more than a century ago.
