--Your half-baked editorial defense of Sen. Santorum ("Sex and the Senator," May 19) fosters disrespect for law in general. There are two purposes to the criminal code: to decrease undesirable behavior through fear of punishment and to serve as a public-policy statement as to which activities are frowned upon by society. A huge majority of laws on the books are "rarely and selectively enforced," because the mere presence of the law is expected to inhibit or reduce the behavior, at least in public. What your editorial actually states is that NR has joined the ranks of those no longer brave enough to condemn.

I hate to ruin David Frum's theory of American public education, but there have never been any "good old days." Since its inception, public education has been 1) child-centered and 2) a form of daycare. As any home-school parent knows, it takes only a few hours a day to teach kids what they need to know: The rest is busy work and waiting.
The one skill that has been lost to American children is working hard at a task they dislike. The one skill American parents have honed to perfection when it comes to their children is taking the path of least resistance.
