NYSE stocks ticked up slightly Wednesday on brisk volume roughly equal to Tuesday's level. The Dow rose 0.1% while the S&P 500 climbed 0.2%. The small-cap S&P 600 jumped a more robust 0.9%, logging its highest close since July of last year.

Home builders continued to sizzle. Meritage advanced 0.79 to 45.42 on nearly three times its normal trade. Pulte Homes added 1.22 to 65.72 on brisk turnover.

Meanwhile, Hovnanian Enterprises gapped up 1.99 to 52.31 on above-average volume. After the close, Hovnanian posted fiscal second-quarter earnings of $1.60 per share, 39 cents better than consensus estimates. Revenue rose 21% year over …
