--John O'Sullivan's excellent article ("The Eternal U.N.," April 7) is nevertheless incorrect as to the ultimate fate of the U.N. It is going to die.
Moribund now, its bureaucracy will only get worse. I suggest that we resign from it, and let the entire organization simply decamp to Burkina Faso, where the natives speak French and the babbling can be carried on forever in the language most suited to it.

-- Your title,"A New Horror of War," was an appropriate one for Kate O'Beirne's insightful piece (April 21). Since the Cold War, we have been fortunate enough to have had to confront only inferior armies and terrorist organizations unable to inflict anything more than minor casualties to our infantry divisions and air squadrons. Once we're confronted with a technologically and tactically similar army, and body bags with wives, mothers, and girlfriends return home, it will be interesting to see how the American public reacts to an unnecessary tragedy.
