"Botulism and biowarfare botulism is a severe neuro-paralyzing infection due to a toxin produced by Clostridium botulinum, said Philippe Bossi and Francois Bricaire at Hopital Pitie-Salpetriere in Paris. "The use of the botulinum toxin for terrorist aims in the form of aerosols is a perfectly credible eventuality."

The researchers provide a strong case by pointing out that the botulism toxin is the most toxic substance known. In addition, it is also easily produced in quantities able to cause widespread poisoning.

Elucidating the mode of botulism poisoning can provide a clue toward determining whether the poisoning was a deliberate act. For example, poisoning by inhalation can only result from a deliberate act, whereas poisoning by ingestion is ambiguous. Both modes of botulism poisoning produce similar clinical symptoms.
