Royal Dutch/Shell Group said Wednesday, May 7, it is still considering whether to exercise pre-emption rights that would block two Chinese companies from buying into BG Group plc's 16.67% stake in a major Kazakhstan gas exploration project.

Anglo-Dutch Shell, Exxon Mobil Corp. of Irving, Texas, and the four other partners in the North Caspian Sea Production Sharing Agreement have until Friday to decide whether to waive their pre-emption rights and allow the transaction to go through.

An Exxon Mobil spokesman declined to comment, saying the deal is "a private business matter," and …
