The Nasdaq edged up to slight gains on quiet trade Thursday. The tech-laden index rose 0.6%, as did the Nasdaq 100. Volume finished lower for the second straight day.
Kroll gapped up 2.02 to 24.32 on six times its normal trade. The provider of an array of services, including pre-employment background checking, litigation support, financial services and risk management, posted first-quarter earnings of 28 cents a share, topping estimates by 4 cents and marking a 180% year-over-year increase. Sales jumped 87% to $104.8 million.
Randgold Resources surged 1.08 to 16.09 on slightly below-average volume. The exploration and mining company stopped just short of its pivot point, 16.15 (0.10 above the top of its handle, set April 17). The stock has formed a three-month base and sits 6% off its high and just short of a breakout. Today's WebLink discusses whether or not that's a good sign for the broader market.
