2003 MAY 8 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Caelyx (pegylated liposomal doxorubicin hydrochloride) is a novel anthracycline that was specifically designed to address the side effects associated with conventional anthracyclines, including the risk of developing congestive heart failure, physicians reported at an investigators' forum.
Caelyx was recently approved in the European Union (EU) for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer as monotherapy in patients who are at increased cardiac risk.
An internationally recognized faculty was assembled to present the most recent scientific data on Caelyx. Pierre Fumoleau, MD, of the Centre Rene Gauducheau, Nantes-Saint Herblain, France, and Prof. Stephen R.D. Johnston, MD, PhD, of the Royal Marsden Hospital, London, served as co- chairmen of the forum. Physicians from throughout Europe attended the meeting, which was supported by Schering-Plough, marketer of Caelyx in the EU.
Jacques Bonneterre, MD, PhD, of Centre Oscar Lambret, Lille, France, presented data demonstrating an increased incidence of cardiac toxicity in patients receiving higher doses of epirubicin for the adjuvant treatment of breast cancer. Patients developing cardiac toxicity are usually not symptomatic. However, further use of conventional anthracyclines is limited since cardiac toxicity is cumulative.
