When using IBD Stock Checkup at investors.com, it's easy to get drawn to the five Diagnosis ratings and where the stock ranks in its group based on these ratings. Dozens of key statistics on a stock are boiled down to their essence.
But scroll down a bit, and you'll find other data that are equally useful, especially when it comes to understanding how the ratings take shape.
The first section is the IBD SmartSelect Ratings. Compare a stock's Earnings Per Share with its Fundamental Rating on top. Sometimes you may find that a high EPS Rating doesn't translate to a high Fundamental Rating.
That's because the EPS Rating compares a stock's earnings growth against all other stocks in IBD's database. The Fundamental Rating looks not just at earnings growth, but also sales growth, profit margins and return on equity.
