United Online Q1 net beat views
The discount Internet service provider earned 25 cents a share, topping views by 4 cents. Last year United Online, which uses the NetZero and Juno brands, earned a penny. Revenue rose 45% to $73.8 mil. It raised Q4 and fiscal '04 forecasts. United Online rose nearly 9% to 22.36, a 2 1/2-year high.
** United's paying subscribers rose 229,000 in the quarter to 2.4 mil, well above estimates. Most ISPs are losing dial-up users to broadband or low-price rivals.
FTC targets Web auction scams
It's joining 33 state and local law enforcement agencies to shut down con artists who fleeced thousands of Web users out of money and merchandise. Under "Operation Bidder Beware," it plans at least 57 actions ranging from warnings to prosecutions. Using eBay and other services, con artists took payments but didn't send the goods, or vice versa.
