Garmin earnings rose 56% in Q1
The maker of global positioning devices beat views by 8 cents with a profit of 39 cents a share. Sales grew 23% to $123.8 mil. Garmin expects to earn 40-43 cents in Q2. Analysts see 40 cents. It upped its full-year view to $1.54-$1.60 from its old forecast of $1.45-$1.54. Garmin shot up 8% to a new high of 42.36.
Hardware trio gets downgrades
Banc of America Securities cut EMC and Network Appliance to sell and Dell to neutral on valuation. An EMC-Microsoft pact also threatens Network Appliance. And BofA says it's still too early to declare a rebound in tech spending. EMC fell 4%, Network Appliance fell 8% and Dell fell nearly 3%.
** Dell COO Kevin Rollins sees no change in sluggish tech spending. But the Iraq war had little impact, and SARS' impact on business is "a little overplayed."
** Dell is working with Silicon Valley start-up Good Technology on a new wireless handheld to take on Research in Motion's BlackBerry. Meanwhile, Dell will sell Good's G100 device.
