TAGAYTAY CITY(via PLDT)-Arnel Quirimit returned to the winner's circle in spectacular fashion yesterday but Merculio Ramos held on to the yellow jersey of leadership after five laps of the Tour Pilipinas 2003 bikathon here.
Quirimit, team captain of the Tanduay Distillers, sustained a solo breakaway in the downhill run to the finish and became the second double stage winner after Warren Davadilla by topping the 174-kilometer stage in four hours, 13 minutes and 19 seconds.
Quirimit's teammate Ericson Obosa finished second for the day over Lito Atilano and Frederick Feliciano, who checked in 34.41 seconds behind the lap winner.
But the 27-year-old Quirimit, the winner of the kick-off stage in Legaspi City, could only advance to fourth place from sixth, still four minutes and 17 seconds away from Ramos, who coasted home in the company of the other top 10 riders in the day's 14-man fourth group .
"Everybody's watching me so I just maintained my pace and defended the lead,'' said Ramos in Tagalog.
