OPPOSITION Sen. Panfilo Lacson, the most visible presidential aspirant of the so-called united opposition, is off the hook as far as the Commission on Elections is concerned.
Comelec chair Benjamin Abalos Sr. said that neither Lacson nor the parties that endorsed his "candidacy" at the Club Filipino on Tuesday had violated the Omnibus Election Code.
Abalos said that the gathering of some 200 political allies of jailed ex-President Joseph Estrada's Partido ng Masang Pilipino and the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino was only a "pre-convention" and did not constitute an official launching of a candidacy.
The Comelec has set the date for the filing of candidacy for the 2004 national polls in November, two months ahead of the Jan. 14 schedule it had declared earlier.
