CEBU CITY-There was a most touching moment for President Macapagal-Arroyo during the formal, crisis-charged SARS summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) and China.
Singapore and China acknowledged the role of overseas Filipino workers in their fight against SARS. And the President was beside herself with pride.
She said Singapore Prime Minister Go Chok Tong told her that he was very impressed with the Filipino nurses because even if they were on vacation leave, they decided to report for work when they learned about the SARS outbreak.
Arriving early yesterday morning from Bangkok, the site of the summit, Ms Macapagal yesterday lauded the Filipino health workers for their "act of heroism" in the fight against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
In a speech during the 6th national convention of the Liga ng Mga Barangay, Ms Mapacagal said that the OFWs working in hospitals abroad had put their lives at risk by putting themselves in the forefront in the battle to lick SARS.
