THE Senate foreign relations committee yesterday questioned the decision to send a Filipino humanitarian mission to Iraq after it was told that the Philippines had not received any invitation to do so from the United States or Iraq.
Officials of the Department of Foreign Affairs disclosed at a hearing by the committee that the country would send the mission in response to United Nations Security Council Resolution No. 1472 issued on March 28 that called on the international community to provide immediate assistance to the Iraqi people.
Acting Foreign Secretary Delia Albert said the mission would be composed of medical personnel, social workers and a police and military contingent.
The disclosure prompted panel members Senators Joker Arroyo and Rodolfo Biazon to say the government had no legal basis to send the mission.
They urged Malacanang to abort the plan.
