MODERN day celebrations of May 1 as a working class holiday evolved from the struggle in 1886 of American workers for an eight-hour work day.
But Labor Day's origins can be traced to pagan Europe which held festive celebrations of the first spring planting on the first of May.
In 1881, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions was formed in the United States. Three years later, the group passed a resolution decreeing that "eight hours shall constitute a legal day's labor from and after May 1, 1886."
Although some employers complied with the deadline, many did not. So on that day, demonstrations were held across the United States. The biggest crowd, estimated at 80,000, converged in Chicago.
The heavy turnout scared Chicago business leaders who called on police to crack down on the demonstrators. The dispersal left several workers dead on May 3.
