(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
MILITANT labor groups in Cebu and Bicol called for the ouster of Labor Secretary Patricia Santo Tomas for allegedly failing to protect workers' interests.
About 200 members of the Alyansa sa mga Mamumuo sa Sugbo-Kilusang Mayo Uno (AMA-SUGBO-KMU) staged a rally Monday at the regional office of the Department of Labor and Employment to dramatize their dissatisfaction on the way Sto. Tomas handles the department.
Arman Perez, provincial coordinator of Bayan Muna in Cebu, said they are also demanding the abolition of the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB).
Perez said the group was pushing for the legislated wage increase of P125 in the private sector and P3,000 for the government workers.
In Legazpi City, workers said nothing has changed for them during the past 100 years. It was 100 years ago in 1903 when hundreds of thousands of demonstrators stormed Malacanang Palace, considered the first ever labor rally staged in the Philippines.
In a joint statement, workers belonging to the Association of Democratic Labor Organizations-Kilusang Mayo Uno (ADLO-KMU), Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap, Anak-Pawis, Kilusan ng Manggagawang Kababaihan and other militant organizations, condemned contractualization and the massive layoff of workers in different companies.
