MAYOR Lito Atienza yesterday declared Manila's Chinatown free of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and denied reports that a 12-year-old resident of the district had died of the disease.

Atienza led a march in Binondo, San Nicolas and parts of Tondo, Sta. Cruz and Divisoria-which comprise Chinatown-to calm down nervous residents.

"Chinatown is SARS-free," Atienza said. "There is no truth to the report that there has been a SARS victim here. It's just a malicious rumor concocted by those who have nothing better to do with their time."

The boy who reportedly died of SARS had been examined by medical experts who declared him free of the disease, according to City Hall.

Rumor of the boy's death was widely circulated through text messages and by word of mouth. It was even picked up by some newspapers in Chinatown.
