Mitsubishi Chemical is to commission a 3000 tonnes/y plant in May 2003 for the production of biodegradable polymer polybutylene succinate, using petrochemical raw materials. The company has also agreed with Ajinomoto to develop a bio-based process to make succinic acid from plant materials. Succinic acid can also be converted to BDO via maleic anhydride.
