FISICHELLA WINS BRAZILIAN GP
The Formula One governing body, the FIA, has awarded Jordan Ford and driver Giancarlo Fisichella the victory at the accident-shortened Brazilian Grand Prix April 6. The race stewards reconvened in Paris on April 11 to learn that information supplied by the official timekeepers-leading to Kimi Raikkonen being awarded the win-had been incorrect.
The new results give the Jordan Grand Prix team a fourth victory in its 200th Grand Prix start, and Cosworth its 176th F1 win. It is Fisichella's first F1 victory.
In its rulebook, the FIA declares the result of any shortened race on the basis of track positions two laps before the red flag is displayed at the start-finish line. The race at Brazil's Interlagos was red-flagged due to accidents involving Mark Webber's Jaguar and Fernando Alonso's Renault.
The FIA studied evidence that showed Fisichella, who was leading the race, started his 56th lap when the red flag flew. This contradicted information originally supplied by timekeeper TAG Heuer to the effect that the Jordan had yet to complete its 55th lap.
The result was declared at the completion of lap 54, during which Fisichella had taken the lead from Raikkonen.
``The evidence presented leaves no doubt that Giancarlo and Jordan are the winners of the Brazilian Grand Prix, and I'm pleased that any confusion has now been cleared up,'' said McLaren's Ron Dennis. ``It's obviously a shame that neither driver nor team was able to celebrate in Brazil, but knowing Eddie, I would imagine that a few pints of the Irish brew will be raised.''
