Oh why can't we be wealthy tycoons? Why? Why can't we have founded some software company or inherited billions or exploited the working class long enough to have the cash for one of these? Why? Why?

Sure, if we really were wealthy, our car list would be longer than this one car, but if we truly had the means, we'd definitely want a fine Rolls-Royce Phantom in the garage. We'd ogle its big, bolt-upright, pedestrian-intimidating grille, its monster-sized C-pillars and 5577 pounds of sheer, road-hugging heft. We'd want it just to tour out to the hangar, or the marina, or to drive from the main living room to the master bath, electrically withdrawing the Spirit of Ecstasy statuette as we pass the servants' quarters. But no, the Rolls wouldn't be our only means of transport. We'd also have an original GT40, a Porsche 962, a '55 Speedster, a '61 Lancia Appia, a 993 C2 coupe, an original M3, a '64 VW Westphalia camper van, a '67 Camaro, a Tatra limousine of any vintage, a 1967 BSA 650, a nice, surplus C130, one small G5 and a Swan 75. But the Rolls would be in there, definitely.

The most surprising thing we learned about the Phantom at its introduction was that most people who will buy it will drive it themselves. The cliche has the rich dude sitting in the back reading The Journal while some upturned nose pilots it, but reality isn't that way.

``Most of our customers will be the driver most of the time,'' said Phantom chief engineer Tim Leverton.

And most of those customers will want to thank Leverton and his BMW engineer colleagues for their hard work. The Phantom is set up for luxury and comfort, as you would expect, but it also (brace yourself Mr. and Mrs. Howell) responds well when driven with gusto. Just as the BMW-engineered Mini amazes from behind the wheel, the monster Phantom proves surprisingly nimble for its mass. That's the second most surprising thing about this first Rolls-Royce from the BMW-owned Rolls.

There are other newsworthy items.
