PURPOSE AND NATURE OF THE TEST
Adaptive behavior assessment has been emphasized for many years in the definition of mental retardation, and it currently is used for all students with disabilities (Harrison & Robinson, 1995). The term adaptive behavior refers to the general ability of an individual to take care of him- or herself as well as to interact with and assist others. Adaptive skills include ones associated with communication, community use, functional academics, use of leisure time, self-care, self-direction, school and home living, health and safety, social qualities, and work (for older adolescents and adults; Oakland, 2001). A person who has deficits in his or her adaptive skills may experience problems in meeting the various demands of many environments and situations (Harrison & Boney, 2002). In appropriate assessment of adaptive behavior, adaptive skills must be emphasized across a number of settings and environments (Harrison, 1989).
The Adaptive Behavior Assessment System (ABAS) is a norm-referenced, comprehensive, and multidimensional measure of adaptive skills. It measures all 10 areas of adaptive skills specified by the American Association on Mental Retardation (AAMR; 1992) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed., text rev.; DSM-IV-TR; American Psychiatric Association, 2000).
