On road trips and bonding
Dutch Mandel's March 31 column on his Mini road trip reminded me how great it is to bond with our youth. When I take my grandson, 14, on road trips, we laugh and explore new experiences for him, and new (and old) experiences for me. Whether to the tracks at Willow Springs or Sears Point, or Napa Valley overnight, the two of us find new meaning in life (and cars).
My wife and I have raised five daughters and they bring a lot of joy, but put two guys in a car, and life is sweet.

In 1969 I ordered a new VW Beetle in Iowa and picked it up at the factory in Wolfsburg. I lived in that car for eight weeks, putting 14,000 miles on it throughout Europe, taking in a number of F1 races and Le Mans. Then I had the car shipped to Chicago, where I walked miles from the bus depot (saving taxi fare) to the dock to pick it up.
