The Portland Press Herald is a Monday to Sunday newspaper owned and published by MaineToday Media. First published in 1862, it is the largest newspaper in Maine and headquartered in Portland, Maine. Its Sunday newspaper is called the Maine Sunday Telegram. The Portland Press Herald's audience is both rural and urban, as is the state itself. It serves the local demographic in the southern part of Maine, from Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Gorham, and Falmouth to Lewiston-Auburn. It provides its audience with local news, politics, sports and employment opportunities as well as providing general U.S. news. Its circulation (Mon.-Sat. 64,938 (ABC Audit); Sun. 99,116 (ABC Audit); Sat. 62,284 (ABC Audit)) is the largest of any Maine newspaper. It has won awards from the New England Newspaper Association and New England Press Association.In 2007 the Portland Press Herald was investigated by the state, as well as several anti-hate organizations, for publishing two anti-semitic ads: one from the First Baptist Church of South Portland and the other from People's Choice Credit Union, in the space of two weeks. Portland Press Herald's management apologized and cited that it would pay more attention to the content of its advertisers. Richard L. Connor is the editor, publiser and owner.
